God Will Save the Environment, Not Environmentalists!

Following up on our previous commentary, Fr. Theodoros Zisis uses theological arguments to dismantle the Patriarch’s “concern” over supposedly “saving the environment.” The hidden aims lie elsewhere. He emphatically stated: “Joint prayer takes place in front of a globe. They are all praying to the goddess Earth, and this is what today’s celebration, Environment Day, implies. Environmentalists seek to save the environment themselves. Will they save the environment? Will they save the world? If God does not save the world, no one can save the world. We human beings do not bear responsibility for saving the world. We bear responsibility for the salvation of our souls. Saving the world is not our task; that is in God’s hands. Even if we wanted to destroy the world through natural disasters, we would not be able to. God would prevent us. God alone either allows the environment to be destroyed in order to discipline us or preserves it. Our responsibility is to attend to the salvation of our souls. And if we attend to the salvation of our souls and fulfil our spiritual duties, then the natural environment is saved as well. The fact that the natural environment is being destroyed today is due to our lack of spiritual steadfastness. When people are spiritually steadfast and live ascetically, live simply, live according to God’s commandments, then the natural environment is automatically saved as well. We must not live in comfort, self-indulgence, and luxury.” We wholeheartedly agree!
