The disastrous consequences of syncretistic “overtures” to heretics: Destruction—Accommodation

 

It is well known that the proponents of Ecumenism present the Dialogues and all the “bold overtures” to heretics as a “blessing” and a panacea for achieving the “union of the churches.” There is, however, also a substantial counterargument, which demonstrates that relations of this kind have disastrous consequences. The late Fr G. Kapsanis [former Abbot of Gregoriou Monastery of Mount Athos - tr.] had pointed this out in the accommodating stance of many Orthodox clergy and lay theologians, who accord ecclesial status to heretical groups.

“If the shepherds of the Church adopt a syncretistic stance towards heresy, the flock will lose its sensitivity to the confession of the faith and will easily fall into heresy, while heretics will form the impression that they are not far from the Truth and therefore have no need to repent. Hence, the very strict stance prescribed by the Sacred Canons towards heretics is, at its heart, a loving stance, both because it safeguards the flock from the scourge of heresy and because it prompts the consciences of heretics to return”!

We believe that the ever-memorable confessor Fr George has been vindicated. Half a century of theological Dialogues and countless “comings and goings” have created an explosive situation. Heretics stubbornly persist in their errors, which “our own” people “baptize” as “different traditions,” while the Orthodox and confessional self-awareness of the Orthodox faithful is becoming dangerously dulled!
