Elder Moses of Athikia

1872 – June 15, 1946

On the fifteenth (15th/28th) of the month of June, the commemoration of our Venerable and God-bearing Father, Elder Moses, Founder of the Holy Monasteries of the Supreme Commanders and of the Annunciation of the Theotokos in Athikia, who reposed in sanctity in the year 1946.

A BRIEF LIFE OF THE VENERABLE ONE

Elder Moses (in the world, Mercurios Trypitinias) was born and raised on the remote island of Kastellorizo. In his youth, he worked as a sailor. However, he abandoned this profession to dedicate himself to God. He became a disciple in the Skete of the Three Holy Fathers (Founders of the renowned Nea Moni) on Mount Provateio in Chios and was tonsured into the Great Schema by the Venerable Elder Pachomios of Chios (the spiritual guide of Saint Nektarios).

In 1932, he was on Mount Athos at the Skete of Kavsokalyvia, where he practiced asceticism for several years. He founded a total of four monasteries (one in Salamina, one in Platanos of Agioi Theodoroi, and two in Athikia, Corinth), while two other monasteries in Corinth (Monastery of the Holy Trinity in Examilia and the Monastery of Saint Marina in Sofiko) also invoked his blessing for their foundation. He gathered around him a multitude of monks and nuns.

He reposed in sanctity on the 15th of June (28th by the civil calendar) in 1946 and was buried in the men's Monastery of the Annunciation in Athikia. At the time of his exhumation, his relics emitted a fragrance and are preserved in the women’s Monastery of the Holy Archangels in Athikia, Corinth.

The Venerable One had the gift of foresight and insight, and he worked many miracles during his life and continues to do so after his repose for those who call upon his intercessions to God with faith. In addition to his ascetic struggle, he labored for the Orthodox Tradition and against the Papal calendar innovation. Concerning him and his sanctity, there is also testimony from the recently canonized [by the New Calendarists] Elder Porphyrios (Bairaktaris) of Kavsokalyvia (+1991), who referred to the Venerable Moses as a great saint and deified one.
