…Pray continually and confess purely, and partake with fear and trembling, with love and reverence and with warm and unwavering faith, of the all-holy Body and Blood of the Lord. Read with attention the lives of the Saints and their sacred writings. Guard your tongue and your hearing, the one that it may not speak, the other that it may not hear, the things which God turns away from, hates, and forbids. Have modesty in appearance, in gait, and in clothing. Keep away from the satanic spectacles of theaters, dances, and songs. Have a calm, pure, and humble look, lips pure, hands blameless, a heart compassionate, thoughts pure, manners noble, and a soul good and serene. Speak the truth, turn away from falsehood, love and care for the one who gave you birth, adorn yourself with modesty and virginity and with every good work and word. Do not believe deceptive promises. Do not have correspondence with persons promising you many good things yet fulfilling nothing, so that your grief may not increase and you greatly harm yourself.
Hear, my beloved child, from the
one who loves you for the Lord as his own member, and guard as the apple of
your eye my counsels, and I promise you that through them you will find peace
and great benefit and finally enjoy eternal life, joy, and kingdom.
I desire to learn by your own
hand concerning your health and your condition. May the grace of our Lord Jesus
Christ preserve you, govern, strengthen, and enlighten you, that you may do His
holy will and be delivered always from the snares of the deceitful dragon,
Amen.
The one praying, blessing,
loving, and embracing you from the soul, the humble and least Spiritual Father,
Hieromonk Ieronymos, formerly of
Saint Paul’s Monastery [on Mount Athos].
