"We do not fight for money,
nor for glory, nor for other perishable goods. We stand unwavering in the
struggle only for our common wealth, for the treasure of the sound faith handed
down by the Fathers...
"The ears of the simple have
been deceived and accustomed to the delusion of heresy. The little children of
the Church are trained in corrupt teachings. Baptisms are performed by
heretics, as well as the funeral services for the departed, the visitation of
the suffering, the consolation of the sorrowful, the support of those in
distress, and various forms of aid, as well as the celebration of the Holy
Mysteries.
"Through all these things, a
bond is formed with them among the people, and they come to be of one mind, so
that, in a short time, even if we were granted some measure of freedom, there
would no longer be any hope of bringing back to the knowledge of the truth
those who have been encompassed by this prolonged delusion."
- St. Basil the Great, quoted in Străjerii
Ortodoxiei. Luptele monahilor pentru apărarea Ortodoxiei, p. 63.
