Anger out of zeal...

Letter 658 of St. Baransuphios the Great and St. John the Prophet

Question:

“When I see someone insulting religion and blaspheming the holy faith, I am aroused to anger against this person, supposedly out of zeal. What does this mean?”

Response:

You have certainly heard that no one can come to correction through evil, but rather only through good. Therefore, speak to this person with gentleness and long-suffering, advising the insulting one with fear of God. If, however, you see that you are aroused to anger, it is not necessary to say anything to him.
